The Boards of The Melos Foundation and Greenacre Baptist Christian Community School (GBCCS) are delighted to announce that on Sunday 27 March a decision was made for GBCCS to join The Melos Foundation as a participating school operator. The resolution at the AGM was the result of much prayer and discussion between The Melos Foundation and the Board and school leadership, with the GBCCS board attracted to the opportunity to be part of this unique educational partnership designed to strengthen the cause of Christian education.
Formed in 1985, Greenacre Baptist Christian Community School is a K-12 school located in the Bankstown suburb of Greenacre. GBCCS sees itself operating in partnership with both families and the church, complementing the teaching and positive values embraced in a Christian faith and lifestyle. The school motto is ‘Grow up into Christ’, expressing the desire of staff that each student reach their God given potential academically, physically, socially and spiritually so they become effectively equipped for God’s service.
It was Green Point Christian College who initiated the idea of forming a group of Christian schools who would be stronger and more secure by joining together under a single governance structure. This would help to ensure quality and expertise in governance for all group members into the future. In joining the group, Greenacre Baptist Christian Community School becomes the third participating member school of The Melos Foundation.
The Melos Foundation concept arises from the Biblical symbolism of the Body of Christ. Each part, no matter their strength or function, contributes to the flourishing of the whole. The stronger support the weaker, the weaker contribute to the stronger, and all work for the common goal of effectively serving their particular community with Christian schooling. This not only serves local communities into the future but ensures schools stay free of the issues of poor governance, lack of expertise and resources, and allows for economies of scale. It downplays the idea of independence and highlights the importance of interdependence.
The Foundation is a public company limited by guarantee incorporated on 6 March 2020. It is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profit Commission (ACNC) as a charity with the sub-type ‘advancement of education’. The Foundation leads a participatory arrangement between different school operators to support the growth of an educational partnership to strengthen the cause of Christian education by:
- taking a role in the governance and senior management of each member; and
- providing a range of governance, educational and business services to each participating school operator to support the strategic and daily operations of the schools they operate.
